One Year of Hera in Space: European Innovation in Action for Planetary Defence

Today marks one year since the European Space Agency’s Hera mission set off on its pioneering journey through space. Launched in October 2024, Hera is on course to rendezvous with the Didymos binary asteroid system in late 2026, where it will study the aftermath of NASA’s DART impact on the smaller asteroid Dimorphos and gather crucial data to help scientists better understand how to protect Earth from potential asteroid threats

Up ‘till now, Hera has been a busy bee on its way to its final target completing near-Earth commissioning, performing a Mars fly-by and undergoing many subsystems testing whereas its small sat companions Milani and Juventas are waiting to be deployed.

SPACEBEL is proud to play a vital role in this ambitious mission with state-of-the-art software solutions covering on-board, simulators and mission & control systems.

This international collaboration underscores SPACEBEL’s leading role in European space innovation and technological excellence. It also highlights our commitment to missions that safeguard our planet.

As Hera continues its voyage, SPACEBEL celebrates this milestone and looks forward to the mission’s upcoming achievements.
