Innovative SPACEBEL Software Plays Role in Euclid Unveiling First Fragment of its Great Cosmic Atlas
Launched on July 1st 2023, ESA’s Euclid mission sent its first snapshots in November of that year and in May 2024, showcasing what the Space observatory was capable of.
On October 15th, the European Space Agency had the pleasure to reveal the first piece of Euclid’s final 3D map of the Universe: a sparkling purplish-blue tapestry containing a combination of data from 260 observations collected in just two week and putting 14 million galaxies along with tens of millions of stars from our own Milky Way on show in incredible detail.
The mosaic of 208 gigapixels accounts for 1% of the area that Euclid is going to survey over its six-year lifetime, i.e. a third of the sky. Even this tiny fraction offers a variety of insightful sources that will ultimately help scientists elucidate the evolution of the universe and, as a result, shed light on the mysterious phenomena of dark energy and dark matter that together make up 95% of the known Universe.
The Euclid Control and Data Management Unit Application Software (CASW), which controls the spacecraft along with its sub-systems and commands the instrument in charge of the acquisition of the Euclid images is made by SPACEBEL. As a subcontractor to Thales Alenia Space Italy, Euclid prime contractor, we were in charge of the design, development, coding, integration, test, verification, qualification and delivery of this cutting-edge software solution. We also covered the associated Ground Support Equipment and services.
Our Euclid realisation is one of the most complex software systems produced by SPACEBEL to date. Considering this outstanding contribution and in appreciation of our remarkable work as well as the fruitful collaboration, ESA has recently granted the Euclid certificate to SPACEBEL.
