ALTIUS Mission Milestone Achievement – SPACEBEL at the Core of ESA’s Ozone Mission “Made in Belgium”
On July 17th 2025, the European Space Agency (ESA) announced the successful assembly of the ALTIUS satellite platform by Redwire Space in Belgium. The platform is now ready for system testing and integration with its main payload: a versatile spectrometer that will monitor ozone and other key atmospheric trace gases.
Initiated by the Royal Belgian Institute for Space Aeronomy (BIRA-IASB) and financed mainly by Belgium with contributions from Canada, Luxembourg and Romania, ALTIUS (Atmospheric Limb Tracker for Investigation of the Upcoming Stratosphere) is set to play a vital role in climate monitoring and stratospheric ozone layer research. Scheduled for launch at the end of 2027 aboard a Vega-C rocket, ALTIUS will also compensate for the decreasing number of spacecraft dedicated to this kind of study.

- We are responsible for the design, development, production and testing of the spacecraft’s on-board software.
- SPACEBEL is also the prime contractor for the Payload Data Ground Segment (PDGS) in charge of processing, managing, and distributing the scientific data collected by the satellite.
- The satellite simulator is also a SPACEBEL development.
